1999年，庞忠旺出生在河北省沧州市的一个特殊家庭。他的母亲患有先天性脊柱疾病，一生只能坐在轮椅上。他的父亲患有精神分裂症，无法与他人正常交流。
他的出生无疑给这个家庭带来了希望。与此同时，大家都有些担心。幸运的是，经过医生检查，他没有遗传到父母，是一个非常健康的孩子。
他的母亲给他取名庞中望，意思是每个人都希望去的地方。
由于父母身体特殊，庞中旺从小就被送到爷爷奶奶家。尽管家境贫寒，庞中旺却从未觉得自己与别人有什么不同。相反，他觉得自己更幸福，因为其他孩子，父母都出去工作了，我想什么时候就可以看到妈妈。

随着病情一天天好起来，母亲终于放下了顾虑，但接下来要面对的却是巨额债务。
为了尽快还钱，妈妈没日没夜地做刺绣，手上全是窟窿。庞中旺感到很苦恼，问妈妈，你为什么要做刺绣？她妈妈的回答是，做刺绣。就是为了赚钱，给你买好吃的。
庞中旺见妈妈赚钱了，每天放学回家就偷偷捡几瓶放在爷爷家。不过，最后这些钱并没有用来买食物，而是用来补贴家用了。
庞忠旺的懂事让人心痛不已。其他孩子要么在做作业，要么放学后出去玩。但回到家后，他不仅要照顾妈妈，还要做家务。只有等一切都解决了之后他才能做作业。但即便如此。他的学习成绩一直名列年级前茅。这也是妈妈的骄傲。
随着时间的推移，他们的债务慢慢还清了，正当一切都朝着好的方向发展时，突然，坏消息又降临到这个贫困的家庭。

庞中旺初二时，母亲因贫血住进医院。主要是营养不良造成的。为了给庞中旺治病，家里欠下巨款。为了尽快还清债务，他们每天只煮一个鸡蛋，两个人都不愿意吃。久而久之，母亲的营养跟不上，最终导致生病住院。
这次的治疗费用就要四五千块钱。他们刚刚还清债务，家里根本没有钱。这一次，轮到庞中旺向家里借钱了。
在这个过程中，他彻底感受到了自己的家人与别人的不同。正是在这个时候，他下定决心，今后一定要努力学习，用自己的双手改变自己的命运，改善父母的生活环境。
幸运的是，母亲终于康复了，庞中望开始努力学习。从此，他的成绩就像作弊一样，稳居年级第一。
后来他考上了当地最好的高中，但离家有五十多公里，每个月只能回来一次。庞中望怕母亲孤单，一连写了三十多封信，并让爷爷每天给她一封信。妈妈读了一本。
高中时，学校了解庞中旺的家庭情况，免除了他的一切学费。然而，在这个高手云集的地方，庞中王的光芒却没有受到丝毫遮挡。他依然是年级稳居第一的人。
经过十年的刻苦学习，庞中旺终于迎来了人生最关键的时刻——高考。考场上，他显得沉稳自信，最终以744分的成绩获得沧州市理科最高分。并考入清华大学。
但他并不傲慢和自满。他说这并不意味着什么。毕竟不是每个清华大学毕业的人都能有所成就，他还需要不断的努力。
